Callan Star Salvatore was born in Mystic Falls, Virginia, to Damon Salvatore and Andie Star.

Damon and Andie believed him to be an impossible accident, the result of a loophole that they could not find the source of. No matter how hard they looked there was no apparent source for their little supernatural miracle ( “Cosmic mistake—this doesn’t just happen,” per Damon ).

In truth he was no accident at all, but the result of a witch and her vendetta against Damon, who, at the time, wanted nothing more than to not be tied down to someone like Andie. The idea that somehow, inexplicably, a vampire could have a child with a human simply wasn’t fair, especially when the human in question was not the woman Damon loved. That the powers that be decided to burden him with a child that wasn’t Elena’s ( who, everyone knew, wanted little more than a family of her own ) was cruel and unusual punishment.

As a result of Andie’s untimely death and Damon’s anguish, Callan was placed with his maternal grandparents.

They were fine caretakers. Attentive and loving, they did their very best with the anomaly that was their grandchild. They knew of Damon’s vampirism but were compelled to keep the secret from everyone but the child. They spoke openly of his father and his nature, which thrilled and vaguely terrified Callan as a boy. No stopped to think, however, that it may be necessary to check back in and compel him not to reveal any of the Salvatore family secrets once the knowledge was his to possess.

This was proved unnecessary, anyhow, as Callan was a natural at keeping Mystic Falls’ supernatural secrets under wraps.

The only time he ever used that information to further his own agenda was at eighteen, shortly after dropping out of high school midway through his senior year over a round of philosophical disagreements with his teachers, to find Damon and discover why he was given up as a baby.

He tracked Damon down and hounded him for weeks: followed him to bars, to his house, around the town, demanding answers he believed were owed him.

The end of Callan’s human life and subsequent induction into the line of Salvatore vampires was due to his own unwillingness to leave without answers and Damon’s irritation with being tailed by the son he chose to leave behind.

He remembers Damon being drunk one night on Wickery Bridge, fire in his eyes, asking, “You’re not gonna give up, are you? You want to know about your father so bad? Know this.”

Callan woke up some time later with a hunger burning through his body like nothing he’d ever felt before, a newfound sensitivity to light, and the urge to one thing and one thing alone: feed.

This is simply an OC I wouldn’t have been able to stop thinking about until I began to write him.
